The best resorts for Christmas skiing

Tignes, Ski French Alps

With fresh snow on the way, here are the best resorts for a white Christmas on the slopes.

It should be a white Christmas for skiers everywhere, with much-needed snowfall across the Alps forecast for this weekend. Real winter appears to be arriving in the nick of time as families make their way to the mountains at the start of the holiday period.
It has been a close call. A month ago, near perfect conditions led to scores of resorts opening ahead of schedule, but heavy November snow cover doesn’t necessarily lead to a vintage season. The flawless blue skies and mild temperatures of the past three weeks have taken their toll.
Earlier this week I took an helicopter ride around the peaks above Verbier and Chamonix. The snowpack in the mountains north-east of Geneva reminded me more of May than December.
That situation seems set to change in the coming days. But to get the best skiing over the coming holiday period, my advice is still to aim high.
